ISTE encourages educators to create digital-age learning environments for their students. These environments feature student-centered learning, multisensory stimulation, multipath progression, multimedia, collaborative work, active/exploratory/inquiry-based learning, critical thinking and informed decision-making, and authentic, real-world contexts. Using GPS-enabled devices allows teachers to create such environments.

The challenge for teachers is to use technology effectively in classrooms to help students take ownership for learning and develop the practical and criticalthinking skills necessary to better understand the world around them. To meet this challenge, teachers can use any of the emerging GPS-enabled devices, and an emerging GPS-based activity, EduCaching, to transform their classrooms from teacher-centered environments to exciting, empowering, exploratory environments that focus on student engagement in the learning process.

Using these tools and activities gives classroom teachers opportunities to instill in students a curiosity about geography, history, science, mathematics, language arts, and the world in which they live. These tools also provide learners with much-needed mapping and location skills that many digital-age learners lack. Since GPS-enabled devices are multidisciplinary, inquiry-driven, field-based tools, they are useful tools to engage learners across the K-12 and university curricula.
